What the tool does and does not do
The tool reads only the digits that you type. It is not a look-up of a national ID. It does not search for the name or data of a person, and it does not call any office.
There is no official public method to calculate the last digit. So the tool does not say that a number is real or false. It flags only what cannot happen, such as a date that does not exist or an unknown governorate code.
The tool cannot know if a number is real or if it belongs to a person. For an official look-up, go to the official offices.

How to use it
- Take the 8th and 9th digits of the national ID number. They come after the birth date.
- Find the two digits in the table.
- If the code is 88, the person was born abroad.
Where do the codes come from?
The codes come from Decree 1121 of 1995 of the Minister of Interior, as a published reference states. We did not read the text of the decree.
If Egypt makes a new governorate, it can have a code that we do not know yet. We check the table once a year.

What is the code of Cairo in the national ID number?
The code is 01. Alexandria is 02, Port Said is 03 and Suez is 04.
What does the code 88 mean in the national ID number?
It means that the person was born outside the republic, that is, abroad.
How many governorate codes are there?
There are 27 codes for governorates, and one more code, 88, for a person born abroad. We know no governorate for other numbers.
What if the code is not in the table?
First check that you typed the number correctly. If you did, we may not have the code in our table. The tool warns about an unknown code. It does not judge the number.
Is the governorate of birth the governorate where the person lives?
No. The code shows the governorate of birth only. The person can live in a different governorate today.
